WTF Car? Awards: Mercedes CLC

Posted by The Insider at 11:40 am on Friday January 23, 2009

Winner of the Cynical Rehash Award…

In a motoring universe where you can invalidate your warranty by looking for the bonnet release, trust is an invaluable commodity. Mercedes recently released an all-new C-Class range and we duly sung its hard-earned praises.

New cars, new technology, no need to poke around under that hood; the proof was in the pudding. Then they released the CLC, a next generation C-Class coupe for us all to get excited about. And we duly did.

Before being taken aside and told in hushed tones that this wasn’t actually a new C-Class coupe at all. Instead it was the poisonously awful SportsCoupe of yesteryear, cynically tarted up to fall in line with the current crop of markedly less shit Mercs. But at least if it’s that old dog it’ll be cheaper than the competition, right? Ha ha ha ha…

Agree with this? Wade in below. We’ll add up the total number of comments on each of the WTF Car? Award posts to work out the overall winner, so type carefully.

That’s the official cock-mobile here in Chile, and since it’s build in Germany it’s even more expensive here, so more uncool points for it…god, my eyes are bleeding

I had a jolly good laugh when I noticed how expensive it is. You could have a Focus ST for that kind of money, and still drive out of the dealership with money to spare. Ugly, weird and utterly pointless.
Sadly, however, it isn’t the worst car of 2008.

I tried the Focus ST as suggested. Unfortunately, I was short of a no fear sticker so it felt a bit wrong. I also tried the evo etc. Again they did not feel right, probably down to the fact that I have more than 1 brain cell. The Merc drives nice and is fast enough if you have a full sperm count. Also nice to feel like you are of high standing than the rest of you. Bring out the port!

Gawds a lawrksey, didn’t I go and buy one of these, a 2002 model built right slap bang in the middle of Merc’s crappola period – I even traded in my uber-refined 5 Series touring for it – Seemed like a good idea at the time – but that lasted for about 5 minutes, until the wheels started to come off this utterly-rubbish-wagen. Its back to the cosseted, quality laden world of the spinning propeller for me, in the shape of a drug-dealer-black X5.

“V” Man works for Mercedes, doesn’t he?

I can’t believe car companies can do this. At least there are no adverts to keep it in the public eye. If you want a C-Class grade Merc coupe, what’s wrong with a CLK? It’s bigger and prettier after all, and is also available in mad hatter flavour (Right, JC?).

Plus the B-Class taillights look awful, almost like the new C-Class front has been glued onto a Chinese rip-off of the SportCoupe…

They re-shaped the rear lights, removing the top half. But instead of re-designing the sheet metal to cover the gap, they simply fit a piece of plastic the same colour as the body!
For that reason alone, the merc gets my vote.

I hate the CLC it looks nice from the front, then you realise they filled in the rear window gap below the spoiler so you can’t see out of the back as well, and makes reversing a real pain, the interior isn’t fantastic and you can fit about half as much in it as you can in a focus, it isn’t even great to drive.

Was it really so hard for them to desing one that looks better than the CLC and based on the NEW C class underpinnings? Worst car in terms of effort, would definitely take a normal C sedan than a CLC. Or even a BMW 3 Coupe. Or an A5.

Mercedes why do you not use the CLC name for something better like I know competing a against the bmw 3 series coupe not embarrase the mercedes name.

Also i have seen one near me and the brake lights are broken on it. (good old merc relibility lol)

I also tried the BMW and an Audi, but we all know those cars are driven by short people, with stack heals. So I decided a Merc it had to be. The Merc was the best choice, due to its classic style and obvious top bench mark level of quality. That and the small round button just to left of the speedo.

That is the lowest a car company, Mercedes-Benz no less, has stooped to. How can the company’s ‘Sports Coupe’ run on a previous-generation chassis? Especially when their newly designed C Saloon is miles ahead in the drivability department. Shame. I fully agree. Deport it. Please.

i made my old c class coupe into a clc with a couple of reels of silver tape to square off the headlamps and block in the glass under the spoiler, i now have a clc!!!

god merc it took me 5 mins to make a clc surely you could spend a bit longer developing a car than that!!!

Merc designers have lost the plot. The C-Class coupe is a budget ‘I drive a 3-pointed star’ statement. Family trait? Whack some C-Class lamps. Sportiness? SL grille – make that star huge please. Making it all fit? Roof meets body, but without grace, hence the mid-90’s Jap-style split-glass bootlid. Add more Merc DNA? Let’s swish the side. An indent on flat surface should do. Done.
Regardless of how much facelift it undergoes, overall it looks like a fallen slice of cake. On wheels. Oh, and looks like some formidably mass (i.e. a shipping container) fell + hence flattening the nose.
This car seemingly suits the mistress who’s always demanded a German ride. How poignant. They both attempt to look good with Botox.

in my opinion the only non-wtf car merc made lately is the cls, it´s wierd b ut def not wtf ALL the rest of their line up AND what they have a hand in, Ssangyong, Chrysler etc is simply pure shite, sure they´ve got new n pointless gadgets 7 ie,optional 7 spd auto gearboxes, 700bhp engines in slks, heating for your rheumatic bodyparts, and folding roofs that make transformers look metiocre but pls who in their right mind will actually buy one of these ? Your local bleached blond fat hairdresser ? The junior management at your merc dealer and who else ????
    yuck !

oh and maybe dentists.., where is the style merc ? and yes I know that mercs have that feeling that nothing else really has and it´s usually been good, superior to all but these new ones are just a sell out that wont sell, it´s suicide ! not nice !!

autofil, here in the uk ppl who simply must have a merc can get one a good one from ca £18k for a 4 year old cls, with low mileage from an approved dealer which is less than a mondeo or a vauxhaull fammobil which is cheap, very cheap. Those who buy new ,mercs usually buy lease and change every 3 years and for that target group this car is simply not value for money and because it´s not what a merc usually is with regards to lux ie a budget merc no one except those you don´t really wanna be associated with ( ie pebs pretending to be gentry) will buy one. Maybe in germany or perhaps even denmark and norway where a 10 year old anything german is a status symbol due to the ridiculos taxes imposed on car imports but nowhere else and that is a very small market don´t you agree. Bmw´s ti sold because young ppl coul get one, it had that 2002 heritage but a merc in the same class ??? unless 70 is the new 17 I can´t see it happen.
btw this is not ment to be offencive, not an attack, just my opinion.. I actually like what you have to say lately :D

When I first looked at the thing the design disturbed me. Took a while to figure it out then eventually realized that the car body has styling cues which made me think “Ssangyong.”
Opened the door & thought: why is this so light & the stopper feels like a civics.
Took a sniff then wondered: where’s the “Merc scent?”
