Winner of the Unwelcome Return Award…
The Nanjing MG TF LE 500 has been totally ‘re-engineered’ to bring it back up to date with the most modern of sportscars. No, really.
Just because a few geography teachers in Reading have a monthly meeting where they bang on relentlessly about their MGBs, it was deemed necessary to resurrect the aged TF. Which is a bit like bumping into a Page 3 girl and discovering that not only is she not as good as you remembered, but is significantly more baggy now.
They say that the engine isn’t a ‘K’ series Rover – it’s an ‘N’ series. But the ‘N’ is really just a ‘K’ with a metal headgasket and a few reliability tweaks. The suspension has been ‘redesigned’ by the simple expedient of changing the dampers and they’ve robbed the last of Woolworth’s old stock for the 99p stereo/radio with remote control.
Remote control? You can touch the other doorhandle without leaving the driver’s seat. And the final foot-long nail in the TFs cramped and desperate coffin? It costs £16.5k when a ‘last-generation’ TF can be had with low miles in A1 condition for £4k. Do they think we’re stupid? It’s like buying a black and white telly for the price of a flatscreen…
Agree with this? Wade in below. We’ll add up the total number of comments on each of the WTF Car? Award posts to work out the overall winner, so type carefully.

The MGF was an also ran in the 90’s, even worse now. Just buy an MX5 or an Elise, or god anything other than this tribute to mediocrity.
Why can’t MG just get it in their head that no matter how many revisions they make of the MGF, it will never work.
me likes the color, me likes goldfish….
MY GOD please stop the chinese from meddling with ancient European cars!
What MG do know is that you can never underestimate the predictability of stupidity, make the cars and they will come and buy ‘em…
even the name is stupid…should’ve been named the Phailcar…with the R backwards
When the MGF was launched everybody thought it was great, it looked modern, it handled well and was reasonably nippy. That was 1995, this is 2009, MG should launch an all new MG, not a warmed up old codger, they should call it the midget, and they should base it on the fantastic Smart Roadster?? errr ummm maybe…
I didn’t think it was great, didn’t it have the air suspension from an Austin Allegro and other bits from the Metro and wasn’t the cylinder head gasket almost guaranteed to go?
a comment on this car? lol
cars like this are what caused our motor industry to fail miserably. Oh well, now it can fail all over again!
It always was way worse than the MR2 or the MX-5.
That’s sad, because small open top sportscars should be british…
At least its guaranteed,…….guaranteed to leave you stranded. Just like the original.
The MGF did have struts from a metro and the k-series engine used in the Lotus Elise among others, on the MG fitted with substandard gaskets (most of which were replaced under guaranty, but this is beside the point) of course these things are now out of date. And MG are about to warm up another dead motor, lets see something new and original from them like the MGF was in the first place, we need to save the fate of the British sports car!
Yum. Its the same colour as nans bath…
One of my fondest memories of the MGF was when a I was a car salesman a few years back, I offerd a guy £6k in part exchange for his low mileage 2yr old example. He stormed out indignantly. A few weeks later MG Rover went bust and he came back. The guy left in tears (no lie!) when we offered him £2.5k.
I don’t think the chinese industrialists have realised that you can’t polish a turd. Paticulary a steaming one like the MGF or in fact any Rover/MG of the last 30 years.
Communism Never Fails
‘Re-engineered’? Re-animated, more like…the Chinese really should have let this old dog rest in piece!
Coming to a hard shoulder in a cloud of smoke near you!
I actually like this car… but everyone will probably kill me for saying this. the old grill was WAAAAAAAAAY better though(and its chinese so quality is possibly low)
Yeah but what is it like to drive?
I actually like this car as well. Not as much as an MX-5 or an MR2, but I like its sleak looks and especially the way it handles. But don’t get me wrong; the only way I would buy one would be as a second car, something cheap to buy and run for the weekend fun. No way this could possibly make it into 2009.
MG TF only worked until 2001, I don’t know what their idea is now, but it can never work nowadays.
Made by the chinese for the cost of a second hand cortina and they try and charge us the earth. It was bad before and is probably worse now. If anyone is thinking about one of these take my advice and buy an MX5, its cheaper as well
What person with a brain cell would pass on a new MX-5, and go for this heap instead?
This was built for people without brain celss – rover drivers
Wooww…
The redesign really brought it forward into the 20th century….
@ No.23, only the senile ones are lacking in brain cells…
I have previously expressed my disliking of Chinese industry – no imagination, bugger all quality, cheap for a reason. But then after they’ve flown this to England (in a plane powered by coal, sweat and blood) they expect us to pay what, chances are, is mostly a crap load of import tax for a car that’s actually 5-10% worse that the already sub-par MG TF that went before?!! What do they take us for?!
“a few geography teachers in Reading have a monthly meeting where they bang on relentlessly about their MGBs” – obviously you’ve never been to Reading. It’s a scaled dowm version of London, with an extra injection of chavs. They’d instead bang on about their MG ZRs.
MG MGM ER ER MG WTF?????
Its like watching your dad trying to dance. he probably was alright back in the day but now….
There is just an annoying disharmony in design, which, in fact, breeds a negative overall impression.
Well the MX5 looks like it belongs on a canal, and of course they have changed the looks time and time again.
Wonder how many of MX5 drivers have actually driven it? I agree it’s dated, but the name is alive, which is more than this country could seem to do. Why criticise something the the good old british could do any better
Remember when your wife asked “did something crawl into you and die?”
Well i think it has come back alive and crawled out your ass in the form of orange MG
As restorations go they’ve at least laid the undercoat down faily well. I wonder if they’ll finish it in red or b.r.g?
There goes the Chinese car industry…..!
I have seen these in the flesh and if im honest I do not think they are bad looking motors its just that they are older than stonehenge and they have not updated it enough they should have atleast redo the interior not just add a radio that everyone used to have in like the 1990s.
The Lovecat’s (13) comment is priceless… ROFL
Errr…Yeah. Bye MG.
Leally silly le-invention of a nice Blitish spolts cal
lol @comment #36 ^
4k you reckon? just spend the other 12 doing it up to the spec of the “new” one? probably be even better :S
The wrong type of recycling, but probably better built!
Awful then, worse now. Only exists due to men with beards and no friends being allowed access to t’internet and banging on about how good the past was. It wasn’t. Awful car. Yuck.
Thеse guys at MG are crazy!!We are not stupid.
I like it.
I braught one! but not in the orange. went for white.
its a lovely car to drive and better alround than the mx5 i had before it.
yes its a old car made good but atleast they are trying!
leave off it abit.
dont comment s**t stuff till u actually tryed one out!
Still a pretty little thing though. Buy a used one and save like 10k!
I was thinking about buying an MG TF 160. I was looking and found one for 5K with 5K on the clock. Its quicker than one of these and almost exactly the same but better than the new one for thousands more pounds. Why on earth would you buy a new one!
the mg tf 160 is just a girls car for chavs who just like boy racing and it dosent look any diffrent to the previos why dont they just stop trying to bring back mg
Mr. Anonymous at Comment #2:MG Aren’t the ones to blame. It’s Nanjing. The Chinese have very little actual car industry. In China, a car is still a novelty, so it doesn’t matter how much it costs to them.
Does #42 DMS realise that by defending his car he just voted for it?
Making this thing continue to live is a bit like trying to wake up your old, long dead granny by poking her coffin and saying “Come on then old dear, up you get!” It’s just ridiculous. Leave MG owners with a modicum of their dignity, and for the love of God, don’t try and resurrect this brand. I wouldn’t talk to you about that time you got caught shoplifting a two Twix and a CD just to see you squirm, now would I?
this may be the same car from 1995 but all those people out there this is better than the mazda mx5! the reason this is a classic english sports car the more you critisize this car the less people will buy it the less people who buy it the less money mg makes and then the chinese scrap mg and then there are no tradishional affordable british sports cars. point made?
Give us a break about the MX5. Not everybody is a hairdresser and wants to buy the Mazda you know!
I like the new MG TF, I think what they really should have done is a) waited another 2-3 years before they put it out so the old MGFs/MGTFs on the second-hand market would be on their death throes b) price it a bit more competitively (£12K or so) so that it nails the soulless japanese stuff.
I’d rather buy an MGF/TF than an MR2 or MX5 any day personally.
Don’t you all see? It’s a cunning Chinese plan. A plan to tip the British Car Industry -for what it is- over the edge.
They have a chance to design something really groundbreaking, and they give us this! People, MG buyers, DO NOT BUY THE CAR, STEP AWAY FROM THE DEALERSHIP!
Look you lot, listen up!
The MR2 used to be good looking, now what is it? A load of dodgy looking bodywork.
The MX5, a classic, unlike the MGF and MGTF. The MX5 may look like a hairdressers car, but it has what people want today, it had that when it first came out, unlike the MGF and MGTF.
What was that? Reliabilty, cheap to run, fun. It hasn’t changed much because it doesn’t need to. The MG bunch on the other wheel… it really should go for a spot of plastic surgery.
Not too much, just maybe something to make it look like it’s from this century and not the last one.
You don’t see anyone rehashing an Allegro or Simca do you? Anyone?
MGF…….GTF.
LE 500? Limited edition? Well at least that means it wont be properly produced..hopefully.
And they’ll struggle to sell 5 let alone 500 of the monstrosities. the only good thing is the black wheels, which you can get on much better cheaper and more classy cars.
I think they should put ‘moron’ on the back window for every owner of this tosh
@ comment 49 as well –
How is a CHINESE manufacturer that just TOOK A RUBBISH BRITISH DESIGN (not implying british designs are rubbish but this is) and STUCK AN MG BADGE on them classed as traditional??? WHAT THE HELL MAN!!!! I’d understand if you were going on about chinese manufacturers owning jaguar or AM, but we arent!!!
and lastly (sorry about this guys)
but they dont seem to have it now.
there are a few people goin on about the british sports car industry -1 word LOTUS!!!! I think they are doing very well keeping it on track, along with aston martin and jaguar. We dont need MG anymore, i like MGBGT’s and im 16
nanjing ..what more can I say.The car is ok it´s an mg, the name is def wtf but since we´re looking for the wtf CAR.. it doesn´t really qualify
lloydy pls don´t take offence but you´re kinda turnin into our own english autofiliac.. pls don´t, one´s plenty..
luv ai
sorry to pour water on this MGF cremation, but the MGF is what it is. Cheap, wind in your hair fun. I took mine to the Dordogne last year. Did 740 miles in 14 hours (inc ferry crossing) and would still do 400 miles to 40 litres of fuel, and never missed a beat. All this for less than 2 grand (2001 model) How much fun can you have for so little outlay??
omg!!! the advert that was produced for this so called revision of a car summed it up really. Tacky and should not be on the road at all costs. it gives the badge of some of the less ugly looking mg modals a very bad name. hidious and should be banned!!!
#47 – Maybe it’s passive-agressive guilt for buying Chinese crap.
Are we sure the Chinese didn’t accidentally send a shipload of these the UK, then sold them to save face over the mistake?
A 13 year old MG has a place in Chinese motoring, but not anywhere else. It HAS to be a mistake.
Just to make a point… (I have an 97 MGF) the ‘new’ ones are still made at Longbridge although the Company is Chinese. I agree that the design is dated, but the handling of a properly set up F or TF is pretty damned good AND whilst they have had problems with head gaskets, in the main it’s down to people abusing the car. Mine has over 80K on the clock and has never suffered the dreaded HGF. Forget the differences on build quality – put an F or a TF of equal HP up against an MX5 on the Nurburgring and let’s see which comes in first. THEN you’ll find out whether they’re any good or not.
Who in the right mind would say no i do not want a Mazda MX5, No i wount have any of the decent competitors, no I wont have a G-WIZ they are too good (atleast the G-WIZ is newer and better built lol), i know ill have a MG TF lol
Honestly, I’ve never seen an MG here before (Phils.) nad my dad said that the last time trhey saw one was in the 60s and 70s.
I kinda liked the styling and the color. But knowing how cheap and unreliable chinese cars are, this car should s*ck at almost everything.
PS. The cherry, geely, etc… cars are one of the saddest cars (cab) I’ve ever been in. Sadder than the early kia CD5’s!
If cars can be compared to celebs, and MG had gone bankrupt long ago it could have been compared to Elvis. Now, the only thing that comes to my mind is Michael Jackson…
I always thought the British car industry died when British Leyland ‘managed’ things but it’s just gotten worse. A real shame, thank god Aston is still around.
just compare this with hyundai tuscani..
i think i will go for tuscani rather than MG..
It was a dreadful car when it was released back in the dark ages, and now it’s so amazingly outdated (no end of “revisions” can fix this!) that the competition is simply leaps and bounds beyond what this car offers. For some reason, I’ve always partially blamed this car for the failure of the British car industry. Vile. I do quite like to looks though.
Awful car, just a rear engine metro, it was bad the first time round, please note: rear engine NOT mid engine.
Mike on #2. I admit that this is not Nanjing’s best effort, the price tag and the interior are just ridiculous. But get your fact straight before u post any bs here. “A car is still a novelty?” Then why all the big auto maker set up their assembly line over there, audi, bwm, mercs, honda, toyota, gm, ford. For export reason? I dont think so. 90% goes to their domestic market. So stop being ignorant and get a brain.
’s worth posting here just to get this car nominated I reckon.
If vaguely old looking 2 door sportscars are your thing surely the sane thing to do would be to buy a 2 year old Honda S2000 for 15,500 & spend the grand you have saved on track days rather than waste your cash on an 09 MG?
Or if more modern shapes are your thing than an RX8 can be had for similar money.
Hell you could get a 5 year old Boxster for 15 grand too.
NB, this suggests that anybody considering blowing 15 – 17,000 on an MR2/MX 5 is also barmy.
Or an Exige, thinking about it if you really must have a K-Series motor.
It really is a shame they couldn’t have designed a whole new car and brought MG back in a new style. In todays current situation I can’t see them making any money, really is a shame.
It never ceases to amaze me how so many people with so little knowledge and experience, are prepared to voice a comment on something they know nothing about. Critising the Chinese? Any of you ever been there? Critising the car, any of you ever seen one let alone driven one?
To be honest it doesnt even matter that the car isnt any good because if you can get essentially the same thing for a quarter of the price then it is simply a rip off. WTF.
MG have a very loyal following but I can’t see many people falling for this marketing exercise. I suppose the other way of looking at it is they’re taking the last studio album of a great band and re-mastering it to iron out the kinks. Though this is platinum disc money for an old mix-tape.
3 letters…W-T-F
German Tony… the Exige uses a Toyota Power plant. The Elise USED to have the K series motor until MG went out of production.
Don’t knock the TF just because it’s old. The Porche 911 design is getting a bit long in the tooth too.
It’s a 15 year old european car… probably a lot better than the other sh*t the chinese build.
Still a BAD car!
in 2006 when mg rover went bust, it was for a good reason? The product did not work, why would we buy the same product 3 years later. MG need to do what the rest of the world has done, move on and face the fact, they need new models and better made models. I really think i have more hope of being the next king of england, than ever seeing a paper report that has anything good to say about the TF.
I don’t know whats worst the old TF build in Longbridge or the new one by the Chinese
i wanted to like this car. I did.
i cant
Im sad
It’s a HATEFUL car!
I like this car and i find it very sexy and a real contender in the roadsters market and i heard that is really FAST for only 16.5k it’s nice.
When I first saw this car it reminded me of those disgusting free orange lollies The Little Chef used to hand out to us as kids. Moments later I usually threw up in the car… this is no exception.
Just to bring all the kbnockers up to date – here’s what’s in the pipeline:
see: http://www.autoexpress.co .uk/news/autoexpressnews/ 221445/reborn_mg_tf_is_re ady_at_last.html
It’s very easy to knock MG but what you should all remenber is, that build quality issues aside this car was the most popular mid-engined roadster on th UK market(120.000 Sold) & still has a strong UK & european following
Give MG a chance& see what happens over the next 2 years
Le rat I hope your right, Looks great.
Power to the UK sports car
This is the most stupid car I’ve ever heard of in years. Why don’t people just buy the old one which is a billion times better than the “new” one?
Re: 86
“This is the most stupid car I’ve ever heard of”
Heard of but never seen I presume? are you blind or just exaggerting? did you hear about the old one or have actualy seen it?
TBH The colour in the photo is crap, in more ways than one. Not sure about the black alloys either. Looks nice in white and/or black, though. (With or without the standard kit hard-top)- The Mazda MX-5 costs around £15,978 new, but that’s for the soft top version.CC will knock you back a bit more so the price of the TF is on par with the MX5 (which is ALSO a bit dated!)
In actual fact the MG TF was launched in 2002, and it’s quite different from the MGF, and far more reliable.
Why oh why have the Chinese re launched this old boat. It was great in 1998 as the popular MGF (When i owned one) but the 2002 “facelift” and new suspension could not diguse the fact that this is one seriously old car now, The MX5 has moved on light years by comparason. Yes it’s great to see and MG out there again…but for gods sake a few changes to paint and and trim wont make this a better car than it’s only real rival. The only hope was a nice cheap price to get the punters in but wait…nope £15,000 is a little on the steep side, especially as 3 year old Boxters now are not much more…I think personally our far east friends have lost the plot.
Le Rat impudent, Auto Express always fabricate their own images. I remember when rumors of the 06 Jag XK first started circulating, they made their own picture (which looked barely anything like the ALC that became the XK) and called it a ‘World Exclusive’. Yeah, because you glorified a rumor and called it real news!
Chances are this is much the same. Obviously they’ve based it on something, but it won’t look like that.
Didn’t MGs used to be the definition of “sports car”? It’s sad to see the old octagon dragged through the mud like this.
Glad we don’t have this one in the colonies.
It’s a shame that most of these so called car reporters have never driven an mgtf and simply knock it because it’s not foreign badged or named. Most of these deadheads drive safe boring cars with no imagination at all, at least you get some enjoyment out of an mgtf. get yourself’s a life and start enjoying cars again, irelevent of badge or name.
WTF is this? A waste of time! A waste of money! Not worth the fuel it runs on.
The brown paint job is appropriate. If a dog saw that thing steaming in a cow-field it would try to roll in it.
LET IT DIE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! !
please !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Now how was it the Chinese bougt the rights-anyone that would-even-think-that some how this is an MG>
It was as it was-to be no more-much like a slew of Fords running around under Jaguar nameplates.
MG just never evolved and we already have the as it might have grown up into a Miata.
robertfurrey@yahoo.com
It is still a beautiful car no matter what some say, much better than the MX5 or a Peugeot CC or some other…
I own a 2002 TF, solar red.
The summer of 2008 drove all around Greece, with a ferry to Venice and all the way to Denmark and back in 8 days…
There were times I was driving for many hours… Imagine that 10 am I am in Venice and 2 am, after 16 hours,I am in Aarhus, Denmark.
If I could vote for another car that would be a Lancia Aurelia Spider.
well i currently drive an mg zs before that i had a vw golf and a civic before that on a value for money level the mg beats them both but more importantly hands down its more fun to drive. u people shouldnt mock a car if u havent even test driven one ur all going by what top gears says ur just a bunch of sheep u should test drive a car before u comment on it
My mum had a Tf and yes the car was fun but, DO you want to die in this tin can, The price is stupid and when you can pick one for under 5K why is it allowed to be sold.
I Agree with patman on this one the old TF was a dog when it was icy and wet infact if your paying under 10K for a brand new one than congratulations abnd have fun, but 16K for a basic model, have you not seen second hand Audi A4 conv for the same price
We didn’t really want this cars years ago.
We especially don’t want it now and worse looking.
i love the smell of the burning chinese car industry in the morning…
