Going mad for the Tata Nano

Posted by Paul Horrell at 4:53 pm on Monday March 23, 2009

tata-nanoToday the world’s cheapest car goes on sale. Avoid all the options (like a brake servo, lighter socket or parcel shelf) and it comes in under £1,400. Small wonder its home country, India, is going berserk for the Tata Nano.

You won’t be able to buy it anywhere outside India yet. At the Geneva show they unveiled the Euro version, which has the legal necessities like airbags, plus a bigger three-cylinder engine instead of the feeble two-pot of the base Indian version. But that won’t be on sale for two more years and the expected price is over £4000.

For £1,400, the Tata Nano Standard comes with a 35bhp 624cc engine, mounted in the rear. It’ll top out at 65mph. But it is a real car, with four doors, four seats and a steel body. The shrunken price comes from its simplicity and tiny size – it’s only 40cm longer than a Smart.

The Nano is meant to be the car that puts ordinary Indians onto four wheels. Like the Fiat 500 did for Italians, the 2CV did for the French and the Beetle for the Germans. Apparently company chief Ratan Tata decided to build such a car after he saw a family of four wobbling along on a motorbike.

Of course if all the two-wheelers and auto-rickshaws in Indian cities were replaced by cars, there’d be a congestion nightmare. But it won’t happen any time soon.

That’s because, low price or no, the Nano is a very hard car to buy. Tata hasn’t yet got the factory ready. The plan was to build it at a brand-new plant in West Bengal. But the local farmers rioted at the price they were being given for the land, and the plant was abandoned when 95 percent finished.

So now Tata is building a new factory in Gujarat. It will be able to make 350,000 Nanos a year. Trouble is, that’s two years from being finished. In the meantime the cars are being built in small numbers on hastily modified current Tata production lines.

Result is that for the moment anyone who wants a Nano for the has to enter a draw. It’s like the mad old days of limited-run supercars - I remember there being a similar process to get hold of a Ford GT.

The Tata nano will be a great profital project, it will most likely sell to most homes in india because of it’s ridiculously low price. What i find amazing about this is the price, if tata can make a prodit from a list price of £1,400 how much does it cost to build? What i hate about it is it’s face, it looks like someone has smashed it’s front with a sledge hammer. Also why have they put a fake air vent o the side, there is no need. If you are going to buy one (either because you can’t afford any thing more expensive or because you are incredibly mad and you will not have a Toyota Aygo or a Honda Jazz) you have to spec wisely, well… there isn’t any but thats because all it is is an incredibly cheap car, but please, stick to an Aygo!

That’s the sort of car that makes me think, “What a load of crap! Why would any one want to be that?!”
But then I think “Well, at £1400, it wouldn’t be too bad. Better than using my legs at least!”

PetrolHead247 (2): The “fake air vent” is most likely not fake – the engine is rear mounted and by the general look of the car its going to be pretty tight in there, even for a teeny little motor like that. It’s cooling has to come from somewhere.

I think its a great idea that they trying to make the Nano the world cheapest car. But the market they are aiming at low/middle class Indians wont work especially since about 100 million are unemployed in India and 80% of the population lives off two American dollars a day.

yes kilroy, that´s why this beast is aimed at the upper middle class, executives, journalists ect.. and that´s the incredible part.. and for those generally ignorant as to what 1400 quid means to these families.. google it ! You will be shocked ! So No, it´s not cheap rather affordable actually achievable and no it´s not a fiat 500 either, because the little fiat was actually a good car… so what it is is a tuk-tuk with for, instead of three wheels.. aimed at general managers and newsreaders… but hey they put up with it :D
as for the skoda comparison, well that´s like comparing your trainers to a peugeot scooter.. advantage skoda.. The only reason I can see to this thing becoming a success is the lack of choice, and not being a communist or a fan of dictatorships and the leack of human and enterprenorial rights in general, I must say I think it stinks.

The remaining 20% is a big enough market for the Nano … it is 4 times the population of the UK!! And then there are tens of other countries out there that have latent markets for a product like this.

Back in 1959, everyone laughed at a strange automobile called the “Mini”… but the Mini was affordable… yes, you had sliding windows (instead of roll-up windows) and it “only” had an 850 cc motor… but, the Mini was basic, affordable transportation for working blokes. So, you may feel entitled to laugh at the Nano, but truly, it is a brilliant solution to the problem of basic transportation! Or, as the editor of Autocar India stated on BBC: “pocket science, not rocket science”. Certainly, Alec Issigonis would be amused, if not impressed!

jeff, I don´t see the “science” in this thing.. it was evident in the mini, the 500, the smart… even in the g-wizz but this is just market manipulation… if this is a car than so is a quad.. it´s marketing, people being brainwashed into believing that in investing in this thing they´ll actually be getting a car… and that is what I belive to be wrong.. but that´s just my conviction… Taking into consideration the wages of the babu on the assembly line.. and that this will be the official company car of all the execs at the factory and the dream of future generations… who have just as much acces to say autotrader than you and me.. and can see how much car you get for £1400.. in terms of second hand deals.. and they´ll be thinking exactly what you and I are thinking… that they´ve been ripped off once again… the taxes on cars in india are insane.. and they are implemented to keep market forces out and to save the planet ? Get real ! It´s not rocket science… !! :D

ps, no one laughed at the mini, believe it or not it was very modern back than and quite similar in size to it´s predecesors, if not bigger… no one really laughed at the 500 either because it had so much style and charm and even space compared to its size… not everyone was laughing when merc chucked the smart in our faces eihter.. and the reason we laugh at the g-wizz is because we all know that it´s a pile of…. but still it´s science I suppose.. this is the brainchild of someone who only had one thing in mind..low cost/ large profits and mass-sales… and when it comes to cars it has never ever worked not in a free world context anyway. Za pride of the “peoples” republican germany made do with the Trabant for 40 years because everything else was unattainable and this nano is a horrific reminder of that era… yuck !

    To all you scoffers,

If you can afford an Aygo, then this car wasn’t made for you.

It wasn’t conceived as the ‘cheapest car in the world’, but rather a way of putting an Indian family from a scooter into an all-weather, safer means of affordable transport.

It’s not going to get a 5-star NCAP rating, but it’s a hell of a lot better to hit something in a nano than in a motorcycle.

The point of this car is not the way it looks, handles, goes from 0 to 60 and what options you can get.
It’s about getting people on the road, it’s about enabling a layer of the Indian society to buy a car for the first time.
All this talk about an Aygo being better looking and having more dignity is completely irrelevant. An Aygo costs 4 times as much (as Paul points out already), so that’s like comparing a VW Jetta with a Merc S-Class.
You have to realize that people have different demands concerning a car. The most important thing when buying a car is the price, if you can’t afford it, don’t bother considering it. People in India want a car they can afford and if that means stripping it to almost bare metal, so be it.
Yes, it’s not a very nice car, but what would you rather have? This car or no car at all.

Ugh, loads of people in the media are going to talk about it now aren’t they? I can’t stand it when everyone flocks around a car that’s actually rubbish.

Besides, it costs so little because it’s equipped like a Nazi prison cell, and is probably just as joyous to experience…

By all means Tata, get Indians off their scooters, but we don’t want or need it. We already have cheap utilitarian cars, new and used. With all due respect, the only thing we need from you is money for Jaguar-Land Rover. Not a nasty, hideous car that’ll probably be just like a G-Wiz, only bigger, metal, and powered by a dirty primitive engine.

The critics like Mikedo fail to understand that this car is not meant for people like them at all….but primarily for the huge Indian middle class who can not afford anything other than a two-wheeler.

And Nano is not a racing car, but a city car to go to work, for shopping or for small family outings.

If you can’t rely on overcrowded public transport, can’t afford even a second hand car, what are the options?

Giving 200 million Indians Nanos will still have a huge environmental impact even though it gets 54 mpg (no good environmental change). Plus, I don’t think costumers in the US would want it considering its so stripped down, why wouldn’t they buy a quality Aygo. Nano cars are ugly too, the Top Gear presenters compared it to a Pokemon (Series 11, Episode 1).The real point of this car is what KingP said.

Its meant to be an alternative to two-wheeler and if you can afford Hondas and Toyotas, then you don’t have to buy this. Before saying anything negative , consider this: Tata has filed for 34 patents for Nano. And by the way they are the one who own Jaguar and Rover. So cut them some slack.

dear nexus, I´m terribly sorry if anything I wrote gave you the impression of being a racist, I can assure you I´m not. I was simply trying to stand up for the indian consumer and point out the lack of choice presented to him. Tata has for the past half decade failed to do anything to put any Indian on the road and now they claim to have cracked the code.. by adding a fourth wheel onto a tuk-tuk and selling it as a car. I understand the significance of it to a young, up and coming aspiring and ambitious family of four with um and dad busting but to give their kids an education equavilent to say mine, to pay for rent in a classified middle class enviornment in Mombay and to have a vehicle n which they can fullfill their automotive needs.. However, you don´t need to go far from india to see what your 1400 quid can get you in terms of used cars to see you´+d bee much better off if taxes imposed on importing vehilces into the country were simply reduced and give the free market, which india so eagerly supplies with know how and designer clothes etc., a chance to prevail. That is actually all I´m saying savy ? I think Indians are getting ripped off and I rthink it´s a bit unfair. As for the tata nano well there isn´t much to be said, ..it´s simple. :D

Yes, it´ll knock the lower middle class off their scooters and leave bruises on pedestrians so if that is science, it´s got a long way to go. The advantage the nano has over a tuk-tuk is the falsely created illusion that it´s a car… Would I pay for it ? No ! Would you ?

The basic USP of nano is affordable motoring.
    (1) Easily thousands of student would buy a nano instead of a bike. (2) Will replace highly polluting 3 wheeled taxis (3) It’s a people’s car.

For all those who commented about Mr. Tata, I’ll assure you his whole family has done billions of dollars of philanthropic work in India. Mr. Ratan Tata’s net worth is $1bn. But his family’s philanthropic endowments exceed $50bn. Amazing individual!

Unfortunately, the nano was delayed by 1.5 years because of cheap rated Indian politicians.

Look, the thing is, no matter how much hype they make about this car in India, it is still, for most, too damn expensive.
People in the sub-continent have to take loans that take decades, even generations for some families to clear.
    Vicious cycle, Economics 101.

I fear like many things, this may too, be an elusive dream for most Indians.
Secondly, the Tata would be made out of the stuff they wrap candy bars with, so in a full frontal accident with a bus or truck(driven by someone who never took a driving test and being driven on the opposite side of the road), just imagine the carnage.

But looks wise, if you see the other cars built in India, with the likes of the Suzuki Mehran, Mahindra Scorpio or Xylo, which make those Korean cars tested by James and Jezza appear to be built by the Gods themselves, the Nano looks good, and even a bit charming.

@jolly roger – well mate…there you go again…who is ‘you’?? 300 million lower middle class Indians…….since everybody needs to start somewhere then yes, I would make do with a Nano for now…and mate relax….dont go on about India wanting this and getting it…I mean Tata is just another company having a crack at the auto market…if, as per your rant/analysis, its bad product then its bound to fail irrespective of the media hype(case and point Jag XJ220)…If not, who knows one day there would Nano Europas rolling out of Coventry or Swindon …(oh btw look at Gordon Murray’s T25 project, not very different from Nano I would say and also the Bajaj Renault JV for small cars)

I am an Indian & i know how difficult it is to own a car for lower class people. This jolly had every thing served to him in a silver plate but this rarely happens everywhere. Why think so negative about a car whose purpose is just to provide everyone with a car in India.Don’t tell me that u r comparing this car with any super cars as it is not meant to be one!!!

My first automobile was a 1958 Volkswagen Beetle… Safe? No. Efficient? Yes. Besides, it was so clever, and it cost only £1,000 brand new!!!

Few remember that the original VW was a “worker’s car”, much like the Nano, and designed for the working class German… And who built the first Volkswagen Beetles, after the war? Well, a British officer initiated production out of the bombed-out remains of the VW factory!

So, German ingenuity (Ferdinand Porsche) and British direction brought a “German” car to the rest of the world!

A “German” car became a world car, and they sold over 22 million copies, whilst being built in factories around the globe! In the Volkswagen Beetle, we saw a “German” idea which was universal in its conception and resulting birth. Indeed, the Beetle (and the Nano) qualify for the appellation “small wonder”.

Yes, Nano is for “Indian” workers… but it is truly a world-class idea: make cars affordable, just as laptops and cellular phones have become ubiquitous… THAT is the true meaning of “pocket science”– making technology available to the many, instead of the few.

“Rocket science” allowed a dozen or so men walk on the moon, whilst “pocket science” makes transportation available to the multitude!

Or as the original VW advertisements stated back in 1969, “Think small!”.

what’s the matter with you all… TATAs are not advertising this car as “BEST” car in the world which will smoke out all current super cars and comfier than a RR. they are saying that its an alternative to a two wheeler with bare minimum essentials. it is aimed at people who can afford a two wheeler. TATAs want to take advantage of that segment and exactly how big is this segment, last year alone 1.6 million two wheelers have been sold in India. so people in Britain and else where who are nagging about this, the money that Nano makes (if people in India like it) will be pumped into JLR to keep the British pride alive. so stop all this fuss and wish that this car will become a success and doesn’t appear on your highways blocking you. see, its a win-win situation.

wow what passion..:D anyway, nope no silver spoon stuck in my face at birth.. simply took all I could just like the rest of you :D

as for the pocket science concept.. I get it.. What I don´t get is the philosophy that it satisfies.. Sure guys in india are going to defend this thing to the bitter end, national pride, aspirations of motoring etc.. kinda like eastern european petrol heads..thrived on their ladas and skodas and than dumped them all after the wall came down for a 5th hand opel vectra..
and I´m not judging, my dad jumped the fence in ´69, he was 17…so I don´t know but I can imagine what it must have been like..
So the nano is not a dream it´s a state given option, the only option and that pises me off.. the fact that it´s cheap is great.. “everyone??” has access, fantastic ..What i don´t get is how one can be satisfied by having only one otpion.. I´m sure that small indian kids have posters of lambos stuck on their walls the same way everyone else and given the internet they too have access to sites where cars are the only topic.. I´guessing most of you up here on this nano chain are from india as well, so how does it feel to know what else you could get for £14oo ? Must leave a bitter taste .. And that´s where what I´ve been saying comes into the picture.. Here in england, almost anyone with a job can walk into a showroom, put down a 300 quid deposit and drive away with a car.. airbags, aircon, alloys, the sports pack you name it included.. why can´t they do the same in india ? Because of the money ?? Not really, but because of what you must pay for the same car over there.. I can get it for 7ooo grand and you must pay 30000 for exactly the same car because of your government´s ideas and philosophy on tax amongst other things..
The nano is just an object, the fact that it´s an object of desire is what bugs me because it shouldn´t have to be..

I see the point of this as cheap motoring for the masses of the developing world. But the talk of this car becoming popular in the US and Europe doesn’t make sense. I don’t see why European or American customers would buy a Nano if they can buy better quality, looking, better money for value, and faster cars. The only plus point of the Nano in the US, Europe, or any developed country is that it is dirt cheap to buy and run. Unless they sell some improved, better looking version of the Nano I think it wont fly in Europe, the US, or any other developed country.

P.S. Nexis I didn’t say that Jeremy Clarkson would not fit in the Nano orkneyman001 said that.

oh well…when Gordon Murray does it…its wonderful and the guy is genius…when tata does it..suddenly it becomes Lada / trabi…and do you go and compare it with Eas European markets…every country does certain things to protect its economy…and the duty you were on about is only for high end CBUs…A hyundai accent in india costs about 10000 euros (the “fully” equipped one).. I would presume its not much different from here in Europe…only the higher segment costs more….say 20% (in this case a C class)……
these are just some of the facts…
and yeah you are rite…its a state given an option….Nobody would get up in the morning and think hmm…..buying Nanos is my aim and nothing expensive than that …..its just a stepping stone for better things in life….

What “state given option” are you talking about? Is there an iron curtain around India?

India has all the world’s manufacturers from Suzuki, Honda and Toyota to GM, Cheverlet and Ford to Hyundai, all running factories in India and competing with each other selling their latest cars to Indians. Indians are spoilt for choice in the car market.

Tata is a private company which has innovated to give us a car for 2000 dollars. The car will be a hit in Africa, Asia and south America. there are 5 billion people out there who cannot afford fancy Western cars that cost a bomb. It is a huge market. I don’t know what you are babbling about — state control, East Europe…

Looks like Tata’s innovation of building a car for 2000 USD has seriously given a complex to some people who have been paying 15,000 dollars to haul their arses from point A to point B.

Indians are better innovators than Westerners. It is easy to make a car for 20,000 dollars, but almost impossible to build it for 2,000 dollars. But Tatas have done it!

This Tata Nano and its variants will seriously gobble up marketshare in Asia, Africa and Latin America from Japanese and American car companies.

From Model T to Volkswagon to Tata Nano, the auto industry reinvents itself ever 50 years to give the world what is sorely needed — a cheap, efficient people’s car. So eat your heart out. It is India where the dynamics of world automotive industry have changed this time.

The way things are going (recession, pink slips, -2.5% growth)…the Nano will probably be the only car that will get sold in UK – from a point of affordability. No offence and sincere wishes this doesn’t happen but I won’t be surprised that Tata is compelled to sell Jags in India and Nano in UK.
Secondly, if the wise people here think that a company that bought Jaguar-LandRover doesn’t possess the necessary capability to assess market demand and design a product to meet that demand…the reason for the sale of Jag-LandRover becomes easy to understand.
Finally, India today has the largest middle class population representing a market base nearly 5 times that of UK. What Nano provides to a large section of the lower middle class society in India is a personal means of travel which is rain and heat proof compared to motorcycles. A brilliant idea. Nobody claimed it will compete with the likes of Jazz…truth is it has created a new market segment…a niche. The rendition of the idea is brilliant too. Nano is a VEHICLE which can transport 4 people in reasonable comfort (much more comfort compared to an equivalently priced motorcycle).
As Eliyahu Goldratt wrote in “The Goal” – the goal of every business is to make money. What impressed me about Ratan Tata immensely was his statement “Because a promise is a promise” (referring to increased input costs)…and his team which managed to make a money making proposition AND kept the promise of a 2000$ car.

And to the Indian who drives a R8…which is taxi are you going to drive next? With Indians like you who needs the ‘enemies’ ;).

I don’t think this Nano is worth £1400. If this is what millions of Indians are going to travel on, they’d better bring back the Trabant, really, maybe using some metal instead of the pressed-wool bodywork. I suppose something much better can be made and sold for £1400. Not an egg-shaped thing with ludicrous tiny wheels (10″?).
If really Tata’s target is to avoid families wobbling along on motorbikes he’d surely accept to have no profit from selling such a cheap car. If so he’ll be glad to make a decent car, something like a much stripped-out Panda perhaps, that won’t cost him very much more than the Nano.

Currently Renault-Nissan is developing a similar such global model which will have a price tag of below 2,500US$. Toyota is also going to compete for there piece of market with a similar such model. Many more giant are going to follow nano’s foot step. And why wouldn’t they? Approx sales for nano this year despite its limited numbers is about 70,000 units. Just, it’s a disaster. Since they are cheap, huge lots of them are sold which causes traffic jam(slow is another reason). And since it takes those people some lots of money to buy it(for them), they don’t give up it easily, with almost no service.

I am really amazed by the rupees 1.13 lac price tag the Tata Nano (2260 US dollars ex-showroom).. To hit the road, its gonna take about 20,000 rupees more(divide tht by 50 and u get the eq US dollars.. 400 rite?) in taxes and insurence.. So its not excatly a dollar 2000 car we are about. Its going to cost a bit more.. But even then, i am amazed they are able to make it this cheap. Here in India, a 150cc bike costs 60,000 rupees. a 225cc bike cost around 90,000. anything even slighly better, u end up close to the nanos tag. Taking that into consideration, i think the nano presents an impossible value. Cant imagine how the Tata can possibly make profit out of a car at this price!

I can think of no reason why this car doesnt make sense in India..

What makes me even happier is that Toyota and Renault are also attempting to ‘do a Nano’.. Just cant wait to see what they make.. If its a Toyota, how can it go wrong!!

You can buy 150 nanos for the price of a Lamborghini Murcielago. This car can be the next Citroen 2CV, only with more curry and smaller wheels. Girls will dig the Pikachu appearance, hippies will embrace the cheapest car statement, environmentals will love it for the mileage, and the average redundant worker will buy it for the price tag. Soon Beckham will buy one and your mates will start accepting it, too.
With the way a certain so-called “one-eyed Scottish idiot” is running the country, it seems like this may soon be the only car most people can afford. For 4000 pounds, it is a pretty good deal, especially if they can make it look like this: http://akshatsinghal.com/ sites/default/files/image s/jaguar-nano.jpg .

And despite what someone said higher up, I did actually realise this in the first place. I was just saying they’d better not try to force it on us.

Oh, and it looks like a godawful tin box. I’m gonna stick with my 21-year-old Mini that I got for £600. It may even end up being more reliable!

I think this car could have another potential use: as a potential, cheap kit car in developed countries. I can not see how anyone could fit all the new components or tires too it but it could be like a 1970′s Fiat 500 with things hanging off the back. There would have to be a lot of major upgrades but base cost is so low there would be a a lot of cash buy to upgrades. You could buy a Caterham though for 30000. I can also see it as something you use in a drivers test seeing how it is so basic and cheap.

With the new Tata Nano Indians can now enjoy the joy of traffic jams! ;) When they give up the scooters for cars they will have traffic chaos in their cities. The only reason most people commute in cars is because
    A) everyone else does
    B) it rains
    C) we’re wussies that want a stereo, air-con and airbags.
Cars are not better Indians, trust me don’t buy it. Especially as A/C and a radio aren’t standard. ;)

Someone said you could buy 150 Tata Nanos for the price of a Lambo. I say go for it, then cable tie them together to make a 600 seat, 5000hp, 150m long super limo that does 500mph. That’s better than any lambo surely?!

How many people see the potential in this as a base for something crazy fast and funny. A modern day 500 abarth that isn’t. I.e. Take 1 Tata Nano, add a Hayabusa motor/gearbox and wide wheels with sticky tyres to go drag racing!
I’d love to see it wheelie! :)

God knows what the hell is on you bleeding imbecile’s mind’s.
Know what???? No company on earth can make a $2000 car. NO COMPANY. Its impossible for them with all there intellectuals, research facilities & funds. No one believed TATA could. TATA did.

Now you people can stop whining abt the Nano, as it wasn’t meant to break any records. Nano is in a class of its own with ABSOLUTELY no comparisions. Name any car that exists today, and is in proper terms, comparable to Nano. It was meant for a purpose, it’ll serve that purpose. Nano is spacious enough to seat 3 grown-ups at the rear.

jolley roger said – “the nano insults intelligence, that´s the bottom line”. u jerk!!! do u know what the hell r u saying? the nano is the epitome of intelligence. Intelligence to conceive, invent sth as simple, as affordable…..above all, as practical as a car can be for serving the purpose a car was meant to serve. u dont see science in the Nano? A rear engined car such small, but still ample handling, weight distribution, no wheeling (the engine is still powerful enough to do that, mind you, but TATA’s worked the weight distribution), Nano europa is euro V. Nano ain’t an object of desire u moron……Nano is an object of a purpose.

and jolley roger, and you morons talking abt the indian middle class, do you know that BMW, Audi, Merc are all facing troubled sales all over world save for India & China. These companies are happy to be here.

you guys talk abt the government, taxes……protectionists? state given options? do you have the slightest bit of idea about world economics? its u americans & europeans stupidity the worlds is going through a recession (though I don’t mean to offend you people, i’m not a racist).
    50 Indian rupee = 1 US Dollar
    1 Euro = 1.35703 USD
    1 EUR = 1,572.50 Iraqi Dinars
    1 UK Pound = 1.45628 USD
Thats why the high looking figures & 7 digits in prices of cars imported to India…….sure there is a 110% customs for CBU’s.

India has got lots of options when it comes to cars…….and good options. A microscope, & a telescope do the same thing, but you cannot compare which of the two gives you a better vision.

Wake up guys…….u don’t like the Nano, then don’t. Its your personal choice, but it doesn’t mean it is a bad car. The entire automobile world (all manufacturers) are looking it, and with admiration. Get your facts right.

By the way, TATA has Jaguar – Land Rover, Corus, Indian Hotels (one of world’s top 5 hotel groups). Its net worth is out of your imagination.

Really if you even consider buying this car then you have admitted defeat, you hae accepted that your life is null and void and your never going to get anywhere in life. The designer of this car should be shot becasue the world is no better off with him in it. When the founder of the Tata group , went to the British rulers of the then enslaved India, he asked for a permit to start an iron factory. The viceroy or whatever he was , was amused to the extent that he laughed aloud and said , “the amount of iron and steel you will produce is the amount I have in my daily diet”. He “allowed” Jamshedji Tata to establish his first Iron-Steel plant. It is the same TATA group that now powers UK’s coffers.

So my friends , sit back and enjoy the ride . Just keep your eyes open !!

This, gentlemen, is a modern Mini (no not the BMW effort) / 2CV / Renault 4 / Fiat 500 (original) / VW Beetle (aircooled not a reshelled Golf).

A simple basic car to get the masses onto 4 wheels.

It should do reasonably well here, a brand new car for £4k isn’t bad, it’ll be economical, it’ll be easy to park, easy to get in and out of, cheap tax, cheap insurance. Not everyone wants to drive a pushy exec saloon.
In the current recession it could be just what is needed, while so many “small” cars get huge (BMW Mini, new Fiesta is as big as an Escort, 207 nearly as long as a 406).

When the wages of an unskilled assembly line technician amount to an estimanted 300usd per year and the metal is supplied by a sister company owned by the same corporation who in turn chuck subsidiaries back at gvt and considering the fact that no real innovation or development actually went into producing this thing besides the fees of the industruial desogner who dreww the egg shape and ripped off the inside of an aygo simplified and the mechanical engineer who fit the tuk.tuk engine and connected it tp a four speed box, I´m surprised at the astronomical 1400 quid they´ll be asking..The only reason no one else did it before was simply the lack of demand and the reason it´s next to imposible in hte developed world is because of production costs.. no one here will work for food… wether that is good or bad is a question of opinion the facts are ,however, facts… So what separates this car froma maruti is that it´s more indian.. as in owned by, made by and for.. and this will sekll in india… but no where else.. the whole story about Tata one day noticed a family of 4 on a bike and thought.. why not build these people, my people,a car.. is an example of how peolpe larger than life like to think of themselves being devine.. Persistently comparing the Nano to all those supercars is sth no right-minded person’ll do, which u guys (IWntRHsJob, porsche!!) r doing. And some1 with a supercar’ll absolutely never ever do. Coz he knows it’ll be stupid.

mr. porsche!!, if u like comparisions, go try on and pitch ur Porsche (i don’t care what model it is) against a Veyron. U like that? I like u smelling that Bugatti’s rubber (i’m confident u r stupid enough to keep your window open) sitting in your Porsche and watching it fade away.

Guess what? Hummer is a lot better than your supercars coz its good and very very safe on a highway……and is beautiful when off road. You wouldn’t get its glimpse off-road. Your delicate supercars are no match for a Hummer. I guess you all love this comparision. If a Hummer crashes into your supercars…..you know what’ll happen!!!

and mr IWntRHsJob, i bet that between Nano’s designer and you urself, it’d be better to see you shot in that arse of yours. the designer contributed what you couldn’t in a lifetime. i know you don’t give a damn.

i wish someday God makes u realize how irresponsible your comments are. and like I said…..stop comparing a telescope & a microscope. both give u excellent vision, but you cant say which is better…..it depends on your requirements. Supercars wont last a day off-roading & off-roaders are no match for a lets say….Ferrari. But, both are beautiful.

The Tata Nano is BRILLIANT … the simplicity of engineering … the effective utilisation of space … and most importantly … the price which caters to the dreams of millions of people.

For those of you who live in Europe … you CANNOT understand the context in which this car has been built. More than TWO THOUSAND people die every year in Delhi … MANY of them people in two wheelers … This car gives them BASIC security … potentially the difference between life and death.

I have sat in the back seat of the Tata Nano … there is more space there than the second cheapest car in the world … the Maruti-Suzuki 800 .. its OK .. not great for 2 people …

For those calling this car ugly, cheap, useless etc … you need a reality check. Fly to India … which is still an exceptionally poor country … Realise that people, despite being poor, are still entitled the right to dream. And if the Nano is that dream … then why screw that up?

Capitalism says: “If there is a need, and you can fill that need and make money, so be it!” Mr Tata is the supreme capitalist, knowing that there is a pent-up demand for an AFFORDABLE automobile… Bravo!

The Nano did not emerge from a vacuum- it’s predecessors, from the first horseless carriage to the Issigonis Mini, have inspired this brilliant design.

The current Nano had input from Europe, according to Wikipedia: “The car was designed at Italy’s Institute of Development in Automotive Engineering — with Ratan Tata requesting certain changes, such as the elimination of one of two windscreen wipers. Some components of the Nano are made in Germany by Bosch, such as Fuel Injection, brake system, Value Motronic ECU, ABS and other technologies.”

Even the shape– the egg– was predicted by Buckminster Fuller, as nature has always guided good design!

Yes, the Nano is “Indian”… but it is universal in its appeal. India, the birthplace of Buddhism and Hinduism, the nation of spirit and space travel, has once again begun to lead the other nations of the world.

So, as a SYMBOL, and not merely a physical creation, the Nano is significant… a symbol of India in the Twenty-first century, showing other countries that genius, true genius, is the product of man’s yearnings and dreams.

Now, I shall take my Nano, paint it in bright colours, and install 1600 cc Cosworth racing motor in the rear!

    Brilliant!

enough of bashing TATA has got, people who are criticisng should not forget that the same guys bought the sinking JLR and provide consultency services to FERRARI as well.1400 quids for a car that gives 25kmpl,manages to touch 60mph,has space for 2 adults and kids,is crash tested, comes with optional HVAC,ABS,POWER STEERING,ELEC WINDOWS N REMOTE LOCKING n still priced under 1650 quids wid all the options ticked makes for a good city car atleast in India. And to compare it with SMALL TOYOTAS N SKODAS OF YORE is downright stupid. . this car not only wud let ppl graduate from puny two wheelers to a puny car but would also provide the indian upper class with a city car so that they may go to grocers/malls in it,without fearing a jam and/or dings/scratches on there priced civics/corollas,wich wud be safely parked. In short,a laudable effort,Europe doesn need this car bt India does,n it has initiated automotive revolution in India . . n still if the car is so awkward,i wonder why japs like suzuki, toyota along with renault and that stupid manufacturer called Hyundai or something are working on new models to compete with this lil car.

Another small reality check for those into trashing the Nano because its not good enough for them …

Before you read that … if you have the attention span to do so … please understand … comparing the Nano to “modern” European cars is like comparing a Eurofighter to the MiG-21 … yes, both are planes … and they both fly … albeit in very different contexts. Labelling the MiG-21 a crap plane would be silly without understanding how, why and where the jet is being used. Similarly, trashing the Nano and comparing it with European or Japanese designs is not just unfair … its plain stupid.

The Nano is NOT meant to be a world-beater other than in its price …

This is an article from Business Standard when the car was released a year back …

“The People’s Car, designed with a family in mind, has a roomy passenger compartment with generous leg space and head room. It can comfortably seat four persons. Four doors with high seating position make ingress and egress easy.

Yet with a length of 3.1 metres, width of 1.5 metres and height of 1.6 metres, with adequate ground clearance, it can effortlessly manoeuvre on busy roads in cities as well as in rural areas. Its mono-volume design, with wheels at the corners and the powertrain at the rear, enables it to uniquely combine both space and manoeuvrability, which will set a new benchmark among small cars.

When launched, the car will be available in both standard and deluxe versions. Both versions will offer a wide range of body colours, and other accessories so that the car can be customised to an individual’s preferences.

    Fuel-efficient engine

“The People’s Car has a rear-wheel drive, all-aluminium, two-cylinder, 623 cc , 33 PS, multi point fuel injection petrol engine. This is the first time that a two-cylinder gasoline engine is being used in a car with single balancer shaft. The lean design strategy has helped minimise weight, which helps maximise performance per unit of energy consumed and delivers high fuel efficiency. Performance is controlled by a specially designed electronic engine management system.

    Meets all safety requirements

The People’s Car’s safety performance exceeds current regulatory requirements. With an all sheet-metal body, it has a strong passenger compartment, with safety features such as crumple zones, intrusion-resistant doors, seat belts, strong seats and anchorages, and the rear tailgate glass bonded to the body. Tubeless tyres further enhance safety.

    Environment-friendly

The People’s Car’s tailpipe emission performance exceeds regulatory requirements. In terms of overall pollutants, it has a lower pollution level than two-wheelers being manufactured in India today. The high fuel efficiency also ensures that the car has low carbon dioxide emissions, thereby providing the twin benefits of an affordable transportation solution with a low carbon footprint.”

Folks, It is actually surprising to see so many comments for and against the car. First of all, the fact that everybody is missing is that everybody has been referring to it as a ‘car’ and that by itself is the first victory for this supposed ‘tuk tuk on 4 wheels’. No one has actually said that it is not a car. Secondly, as much as you can malign the design, safety, and even the rational behind this ‘tuk tuk on 4 wheels’, I for one believe that smart pioneering companies create markets. I for one urge you to put yourself in the mental framework of about a half a billion people around the world who need an affordable ‘tuk tuk on 4 wheels’ because they don’t have to get wet in rain, dangle precariously, put their kids in harms way and at the same time have a ‘car’ that will take them safely from point A to point B, this car WILL meet the need. Now, just because you live in hackney and drive a mini does not mean that you would want the same thing for your family if you cannot afford a car. So, put things into perspective and realize that the rest of the world is more hungry for innovation and success that the west is these days. It may be stupid idea, but an idea whose time has definitely arrived. I remember buying my beat up nissan sentra, the first time I could afford a car. The car did not even have A/C and this was in Texas. It was my own money and after walking around and using bikes, I had finally saved enough to buy my own automobile. It was piece of crap if I look back, but I loved my piece of crap and was awfully proud of it. Truth be told, I have never felt that sense of pride and happiness ever again..even when I bought myself a nice little ’08 BMW M3. Beleive me, I love my car and yes I have arrived, but man…it does not even come close to what I felt when I got my hands on a ’88 nissan sentra in good old west Texas. If you can relate to what I just shared and put the guy who’s struggling to save up for a new car…you just might be able to see why this car is such a revolutionary idea.

OMG can you imagine what would happen with 16 commuters crammed into this, on India’s roads?

Well, at least you won’t need to bother with a coffin – they’re already IN one!
Just dig a ditch by the side of the road, and tip what’s left into it…

hmm.. actually in india, especially at the time of monsoon, u really dont have to dig a ditch in the side of the road.. there are plenty of them in the middle of the road..

and with 16 aboard, i dont think the nano is even anywhere close to a coffin.. had it been 4, still the nano will have to try hard to flirt with any kind of speed that could require a coffin if the driver is moron.. But hey, who knows.. maybe the MORON maybe the driver coming in the otherway driving his brand new porsche!!! so yes.. Nano better be safe..

The Tata Nano was made with global intentions.. So i dont think the brains working in Tata are not stupid enough to make a car that isn’t safe enough and expect it to be even allowed to be solved in advanced markets.. Tata doesnt as of now seemed to be worried tht it wont pass the safety tests for europe. But it will have to address the rear end crash tests to enter America.

Its really good to see that there are people who understand the spirit that has gone behind building the nano, as well as the intentions of the TATA’s. this blog’s first few posts were horribly stupid without any logic.

As for safety & sturdiness, yes, the Nano comes nowhere close to some off-roader (like the Hummer H3) but TATA has a long record of building safe and reliable vehicles (from heavy commercial vehicles to SUV’s to sedan’s) and the Nano will pass the safety tests for the European and American markets sooner, or a bit later satisfying its class requirements. TATA is working on it and it’ll be successful.

And please don’t be stupid enough to think there’ll be a day when 16 commuters’ll be crammed into it. even the mayor of crazy town won’t attempt it…………and more than that, the car (engine, suspension, etc. etc.) won’t be able to take it.

And no, Nano will not be a coffin for the 4 or say, 5 people on board. The car ain’t that bad.

One thing that is strange abt the nano is tht it is a 4 dor and not a 5 door car.. ie the rear hatch wont open.. u’ll have to flip the rear seats to load and unload anything.. tht can be anoying!!

in case it skipped your attention.. paul´s article clearly states the nano doesn´t yet meet eu safety standards..but tata are working on it..hte version that will obide though is in the region of an estimated £4-5k a price not quite so competetive..

and vishnu.. you accuse ppl of not useing their brains yet you quote phrases like generous legspace and safe tubeless tyres and talk about petrol engines that use gasoline….

Mini Mouse … with your tiny legs … you would fit into the Nano for sure !

As for us more `normal’ types … trust me .. the Nano is fine. I am 6’2 … and I fit fine into the back seat … In fact … I have been on budget airlines with considerably less leg room. This is a budget car … need more legroom ? Tata gives you the option of buying a Jaguar !

Also … I don’t get your point about tubeless tires being a problem … for right or for wrong .. tubeless tyres are pretty new in the Indian market and they are seen to have big advantages … they better fuel efficiency … and have safety advantages as well … So in the Indian context, which is what this car is meant for in the present context … they work well !

I dont see the point of bringing the jaguar and land rover into this discussion.. please!!! other than the director board, i dont think Tata has done anything to them(at least as of now). all the currents cars and their greatness have to be attributed to ford, aston martin etc etc.. tata just bought them.. and propably saved them too..
Tata buying JLR doesnt have a thing to do wit the nano.. no one who would even think of getting inside a nano will buy a jag (the other way around too)! so why drag it into here??

All the Tatas buying JLR could mean is that Tata is a serious player.. so better see it with view.. Afterall, a tuk-tuk maker will never buy JLR.

It´s a bit like claiming that if a german buys an alfa romeo the alfa becomes german… not because it bothers me but just because it´s not true. We all know, including you that jaguars and landrovers have nothing to do with tata designs or innovations or anything of the sort and if you think they´ll sell the nano from the same showrooms you better think again..
As for the tubeless tyres bit, I think you get my drift.. in case you don´t this is not an indian blog… tubeless tyres have no wow factor. let´s try a biut of objectivity in our subjectiv opinions okay ? just for reality´s sake..:D

in my humble opinion a very cheap, very little car made in india is just not news.. the cheapest little car in the world made in india isn´t really shocking either.. it was a toss up between india and china but expectede non the less.. when toyota or renault pull the trick it will be a sensation and for reasons better or worse that´s just the way it is.. most of the world is still conspicous about korean cars and they utilise the jap tech. of yesterday.. so yes, in india where tubeless tyres are a selling point the nano might do fine.. not for the legroom, not for the safety, or the good looks but because of it´s price.. and that is really the bottom line.

mini mouse is right. TATA has a lot left to prove in the world automobile market. but mini mouse, your statement mentioning TATA “with little competition and excessive gvt. support” isn’t quite appropriate. TATA has competition in the car’s and utility vehicles segment and the government does not support TATA…else Hyundai, Ford, Toyota’s presence in India, and Renault’s JV with India’s Mahindra wouldn’t have happened.

To ____________: I guess if Nano doesn’t have the rear hatch, its probably coz it’s rear engined…i even saw a review in the news which said it has almost no luggage space which is good for its stability…and that it shouldn’t be attempted to be driven at high speeds because its very risky to do so.

PS: People who say this is a horrible car I agree with you that it is absolutely horrible/rubbish but that is from your standards of living and of cars such as other small cars ex. smarts, aygos, fiats, etc. But if you lived in a country with monsoons annually, heavy rains, poorly constructed roads, and almost no traffic laws on safety which form of transportation would you chose. A roofless, doorless, bootless, dangerous, super small motorbike or a small car with a doors, a boot, a roof, and a chance less than a 100% of crashing car.

But TATA’s HCV’s outside India, where people can pay, are very good (equivalent to Merc HCV’s) and are respected for their reliability. Got this info from “The Economic Times”.

I agree with you. Driving pleasure is too much to ask from a car like Nano.

Look … I can already see JC and his TG buddies doing a test drive of the car … and making all sorts of faces and lunatic expressions as they put its tiny engine through the paces of their Top Gear track … and then cracking a million jokes like they have been doing on the Dacia Sandero. Sure, its all fun and nothing terribly serious … but my worry is that in the process of dissing the Nano … they will have missed the point on why it was built … and that will be a pity. But heres a thought … the little Nano does have a bit of a personality … its puny two cylinder engine works hard to propel it and doesn’t seem to want to give up. Sure, it can’t keep up with a Veyron … but why on earth would you need insane power when cars barely manage to hit an average of 15 km/h on the streets of India’s major cities? Its a proper car … not a golf cart … it handles the worst that India’s roads have to offer .. and, as I have mentioned earlier, its a dream to millions of people who don’t have the financial ability to own anything better. It makes them smile … and if cars are all about personality … then this car has one as well …

As for my comments on Tata and Jaguar-Land Rover … those were meant as an irritant … and I can see I have succeeded. But wouldn’t it be just perfect if Tata sold the Nano in the UK as a Jaguar … reverse-colonialism defined !

    Cheers

for your info……..TATA is going to introduce a totally new breed of trucks (breed, not hybrid) and this’ll be totally different from existing models……..this’ll be done exclusively for India’s new east-west corridors (which’ll be built for trains as well as HCV’s).

At least the Nano will teach Fiat how much a basic car costs. It may stop them selling the Seicento (the 1990 Cinquecento with a cute face) for €6000. Just like the Nano it has nothing. Why not bring all Seicento to India and sell’em cheap? Or why not bring there the thousands of unsold cars lying on ships?

    well, i really tried.
Welcome to the svrallo’s point of view, the comment you never asked for!
Is the tata nano a big improvement in indian motorisation? yes,is definitely better than a scooter. Even more people will buy it instead of a scooter and this will generate a lot of problems. One billion cars going around are a problem in terms of space, parking, congestion, accident, pollution, steel needed, oil needed, road net needed, etc, etc.
    Is it technologically advanced? No.
Is it innovative? Like a piece of wood.
Is it safe? The euro version is more safe than the indian version.
Is the indian version safe? Don’t know, but i think that it can’t be very safe, cause is very small, with four door, and is light weight so the metal won’t be so “bulletproofish”. We’ll see.
Will it cost 1400/4000 in 2011/12? No, because money>jobs>needs>>more money>more jobs>more needs>>> increase wages and this mean that will cost a bit more.
Will it sell in Europe? Yes if,It last more than an equally priced 2nd hand car, the net provide reasonably priced pats and maintenance. it’s all about price. Obviously has to be euro5 engined, and fulfil minimum safety requirement. Because they won’t be able to sell it as a quadricycle.
Is it nice? everybody can think what they want. I don’t like it.
Is tata’s empire big? Hugely big, from woods to aerospace and everything between.
About some enormously stupid things written here and there, please stop the poor vs poor war. it’s cheap because the people that builds it is paid in penny and will sell here because a lot of people that need a car can’t afford it because the factories pay people in the other face of the world to build something that they aren’t supposed to possibly afford, and fire the people wich they want to sell the product. This result in loans not paid, disoccupation, crimes, riot and generally enormous load of s**t of this kind. In the same time the guy paid in pennies can afford a house, a vehicle, food, dress, and some entertainment. Then, when your wages is halved and is the same of the grown up wage of the once penny paid guy you will have the same car, house and things at the same price and a slightly worst life. The only men that won’t have problems are the same that decided that this is good for you. And me.
ok it was long and a bit dumb, sorry. ;-)

    From Times OnlineMarch 30, 2009

Tata Nano test drive: why world’s cheapest car should silence the cynics
    (EPA)
The Nano is definitely a proper car – not the 600cc rollerskate that so many cynics had forecast

    Rhys Blakely, Pimpri
You might not expect the world’s cheapest car to be a looker, but the sight of a canary-yellow Nano pottering along India’s streets turned plenty of heads this afternoon.

The admiring glances – from cheering schoolchildren, sleepy-looking bullock-cart drivers and gawping motorists – probably owed as much to the relentless hype that has surrounded the vehicle’s launch as to its snub-nosed aesthetics

But many people who have seen the car in the flesh do consider it “cute” – even saying that the styling compares favourably with many hot-hatches costing several times as much. If tiny, bumper car-esque motors are your thing, you’ll probably like it a lot.

It’s only when you climb into the cabin, however, that the Nano really comes into its own. The most pleasant surprise is the amount of space inside. The car is more than capable of accommodating four “healthy” six-footers, though at a cost – a serious lack of luggage space. The boot has a volume of 130 litres, enough for a couple of modest overnight bags. Also, it’s only accessible by folding down the rear seats and not from outside. The Nano, it turns out, isn’t a hatchback, and it isn’t built for touring.

    Tata Nano
With the engine weight being in the rear, the non-power steering is responsive enough (there’s supposed to be a bit of understeer, apparently, to suit inexperienced drivers). The four-speed gearbox does its job with a minimum of fuss. The turning circle – at eight metres – is a joy.

The ride quality isn’t bad either, even on India’s less-than-pristine roads, which is impressive when you consider that the Nano is travelling on a set of rather diminutive 12-inch wheels. At higher speeds there is a fair amount of vibration and the noise levels rise quickly. There’s also a bit of a roll on cornering (probably because the Nano is surprisingly tall) – but what did you expect for £1,400 plus taxes and extras?

The one serious drawback is the lack of pick-up from the 624cc two-cylinder engine. Tata says that the Nano wields enough clout (it puts out 35bhp) to keep pace with Indian traffic, and that was true on the congested streets of Pimpri, the town where the Nano testing centre is located. It has a top speed of 106kph and can reach 100kph in 29.7 seconds.

But I wouldn’t want to have to rely on it to keep me out of trouble on one of India’s highways (such as the one back from Pimpri to my home in Mumbai, which has been named “the death highway” after a string of serious accidents).

The first version of the Nano that The Times drove was the top-end LX model, which comes with front power windows, air-conditioner, central locking and sunvisors. The finishing of the trim on our pre-production model was OK – about right for the price, of about 180,000 rupees [£2,480] (the exact cost depends on where you live in India).

Later, we took the base model (the true Nano, if you like – the one that costs 100,000 rupees ex factory) for a quick spin. It really is a no-frills car. The lack of air conditioning was felt immediately as the temperature climbed into the 90s on the afternoon of our drive.

So was the absence of sunvisors, which came close to feeling like a cost cut too far, given India’s climate.

So, would I buy one? Well, no – but I’m not the target market. The Nano is a good city car, but is not enough fun to drive (unless you really, really enjoy pulling very tight U-turns) to snap one up for the motoring experience. And though it is built solidly enough and marvellous for the price, I’ve some reservations about that tiny engine.

It is, however, most definitely a proper car – not the 600cc rollerskate that handles like a cardboard box that so many cynics had forecast and the fuel economy, at about 18 kilometres per litre, is excellent. The lower-specification models cost about three times as much as a good 100cc motorbike, which still makes it a steep trade-up for its target audience – aspiring middle-class families who are currently travelling on two wheels. But it’s hard to imagine them not wanting one.

There are no fake things in Tata Nano. The rear vent is given because this car is rear engine. The profit doesnt generate instantly. It will take some time. All in all, its an achievement for every Indian because an Indian industrialist has done whicch no company has even thought of, and now every major company in the world is trying to copy.
Tata Nano is a hit because in the tough time of recession, an cheap car is a very good option
Yes, there were problems in its West Bengal programme and hence the delay. Politics has affected the project dearly. But the main point is that Ratan Tata did not give up and Hats off to him for this is his brain child

    jolly roger’s n critix..
Tata motors built cars for india n not for europeans.
Secondly Nano and cars like this is for masses der, not for classes.
3rdly, designing a car wid so little to spare, needs a lot of research and testing. It not like chopping with a chain saw… got it
Next, the car can sit 4 average indians with ease.Never to bruise knees and elbows.
Moreover It consumes less, pollutes less and made indegenously.they wont litter on your backyard to built one.Tata has always been a eco friendly manufacturer.
Sure they will sell this “tin cans” as per you go, more and more in india and prospective markets in africa in l.america.Rest assured that funds from this venture will be channeld to JLR, so kip the brit’s dream on db6 alive.

Just to be picky… Fiat 500 was NOT the car which put Italy on wheels. Fiat 600 was.
The Fiat 600 (launched a couple years before the 500) was such a huge success that in the late 50′s about 60% of ALL cars sold in Italy were 600′s.
The “500″ was launched in 1957 to be the even-cheaper alternative, to put scooter owners on 4 wheels. Unfortunately, it was too cheaply specced (not even opening windows!) and at around 500k lire vs 600k lire of the “600″, it wasn’t worth the money it cost.
Only a couple years later, after being upgraded in fittings and specs, it started to become a huge success. But it was NEVER a family car. It always was a youngsters first car or a family second or third car (my family had two 500′s beside an AR Giulia and a Mini).

It looks like a cartoon with 4 wheels on it. But seriously, could it be good? can’t say. Will it be a hit? probably, one can never say. But the makers have achieved something. building a car for a set price. So come on Jezza, how about a proper review on air mate?

    Some interesting facts.

1.Mercedes Benz entered India in a joint Venture with Tata. So until recently, Mercedes products in India were built in a Tata facility leased by Mercedes.

    2. The Mercedes body shells in India, are painted in Tata’s own paint shop, as Mercedes doesn’t find it viable to invest in its own paintshop in India due to the smaller numbers it does.

That goes towards talking abt the quality of Tata. Yep, most Tata products are cheap, but that’s what its all about. Cheap reliable transportation for the public. There are 3 Tata cars in my family and I can vouch for it. And the Nano is pretty much on par what what you pay for it. there is no arguement about that.

The reason tata’s don’t really come to europe is partially due to the restrictions merc impose in order to makle sure their brtand isn’t associated with inferior products and the reason tata sells is because merc tech be it from half a century ago still sells… and for 1400 quid the nano is no where near par, not even close… 210 !!!!!!!!!!!!!! :D

The Tata Nano is a disgusting little beast! I’d only pay £500 for that wreck! You have to pay extra if you want all the basic things, ie. Front electric windows, Air Con. etc, etc. I don’t know what I’d rather go for now; a G-Whizz or a Tata Nano.

    Probably none!

As far as India is concerned the Tata Nano will be very profitable for the country and a treat for the people considering their technology over there is not the best. The person hu designed it could of made it better looking though and somehow I dont think the rest of the world will accept the car so easily. I like the comment Paul Horrell made about the congestion in India tho haha! Maybe the government there should bring in their own version of the congestion charge for kicks! Lmao.

I think it’s very unfair for people to be slagging the Nano off just because it doesn’t have electric windows. It’ll be fantastic for a country that has lots of poverty – and lots of people who still won’t be able to afford one will be wanting one forever, I’m sure. People should just take it for what it is and what it is trying to do. And whilst I wouldn’t quite say it’s like a new Mini, Citroen 2CV or Fiat 500 (I prefer all three!), it is sure to be a true icon in years to come.

I see a lot of comments on Nano being a piece of crap and nothing more and how a used car is a better solution to the problem of cheaper mobility.
First of all, here in India, the used car market is not very organized. There is no support in terms of warranty or service in case of purchase of a pre owned car. This is a definite deterrent.
Secondly, the Nano has been designed to be shipped to the local dealers as a kit and be assembled there. This is a mechanism to encourage folks in the countryside to approach the company for dealerships. This distributes wealth, reduces costs and provides assurance of local service.
The car in this form is meant for the European customer. Its meant for the Indian customer to provide all weather transport and better safety than a motorcycle at just double the cost.

Great car: just had a test drive: on back roads in the Himalayas. It’s a great mountain beater. With the two of us aboard it went up those one- lane dirt roads with ease even when the incline became ridiculous. It has great road clearance and the smallest of turning circles. Driver visibility and road feel is great. The windows are tall and the view expansive. I would venture to say it’s better at this kind of mountain motoring than all of the small cars here; rear wheel drive is the trump card. The rear mounted engine also makes for extraordinary front leg room for this six-and- a-half footer! Head room too I found par excellent and even the back seat was roomy enough.

I realize aesthetically it will not satisfy the jaded palate of most auto buffs but the connoisseur will find something beautiful in its sparseness, its pared down essence! In this case less is more.

It is a decent car (meaning, it will be accepted by the indian consumer), and it will be bought in large numbers. Its not an engineering feat, and it will capture the imagination of countless indians. Which is why its so dastardly. Rather than fund Eco friendly innovations like the Reva(Gee whiz), also manufactured in India, the government grants subsidies to TATA, who are intent on serving only themselves. The disparity between the haves and the have nots, is huge. Introducing a car for Rs 1 lakh is only going to add to the unbearable pollution seen in most Indian cities.
